The Fifth Late Bhola Nath Gogoi Memorial Lecture was organized by the Department of Applied Geology on 8th August, 2015 in the Conference hall of the Department. In the function, two ONGC Awards were presented to two meritorious students of the Department. The function was presided over by Prof. J. N. Sarma, former KDM Chair Professor, Department of Applied Geology. The programme was graced by Prof. Bhim Kanta Baruah, Department of Assamese as Chief Guest, Mr. Pawan Kumar, General Manager (Geology), ONGCL, Jorhat Invited Speaker, and the family members of Late B.N. Gogoi. Prof. R.K. Sarmah, Head of the Department, extended warm welcome to the family members of Late B.N. Gogoi, the dignitaries, students and faculty members of the Dibrugarh University. The Chief Guest, Prof. Bhim Kanta Baruah in his address shared his fond memories, intimate association and friendship with Late B. N. Gogoi. The technical session began with a lecture delivered by Mr. Pawan Kumar, GM (Geology) ONGCL, on “Hydrocarbon Exploration in North East India: Opportunities and Challenges”. In his lecture, he discussed some of the important and pertinent issues related to the hydrocarbon exploration in the sedimentary basins of India. He highlighted the historical perspectives of the development of oil industry in India with special reference to the ONGCL activities in NE India. He stressed upon the need of new concepts and technology to meet the challenges ahead in augmenting the present hydrocarbon reserves of the region. He also urged upon the students and researchers to take initiatives and orient themselves to the requirements of the oil industries of the country.
Mr. Budhin Deuri, Executive Director, Assam Asset, ONGCL, Nazira presented the ONGC Gold Medal (Cash award of Rs. 1 lakh) to Ms. D.P. Monica Saini for securing the highest marks in the Final Year M.Sc. Examination 2013-2014. He also presented the ONGCL Scholarship Award of Rs. 60,000/- to Ms. Farjina Parveez for securing the highest mark up to 2nd Semester of M.Sc. (Applied Geology) Examination 2014. Mr. B. Deuri in his speech applauded the initiatives taken by the Department of Applied Geology for organizing the Memorial Lecture Series and he encouraged the students to prepare for the competitive examinations with hard work and strong zeal.
The Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Alak Kumar Buragohain graced the occasion of ONGCL Award giving function and spoke on the importance of Industry-Academia interface to strengthen more collaborative work and thereby raising the scope of further research in the field of exploration for potential renewable and non-renewable energy resources especially in NE India. He also stressed that the students must know the corporate sector work environment and to cultivate practical skills through the use of softwares, remotely sensed data to prepare for the real world situation. Prof. P. Bhattacharyya proposed the vote of thanks to all the distinguished persons, including the faculty members, research scholars, students and the family members of Late B.N. Gogoi. Ms. Neeta Moni Sharma, Research Scholar anchored the whole programme efficiently.
