A week long programme on the National Librarians’ Day and Library Week has been started in the Dibrugarh University from 12-19 August 2015 in concomitance with the 123rd birth anniversary of Professor S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. As a part of the varied programmers, a symposium was organized on 13 August, 2015 at the Indira Miri Conference Hall of Dibrugarh University, aiming at popularizing library in the context of harvesting, harnessing and disseminating scholarly content globally for the development of a knowledge society. The eminent scholar and litterateur of Assam, Professor Nagen Saikia, Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhayay, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Kalyani University, West Bengal, and Prof. Alak Kumar Buragohain, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, spoke on the occasion. The programme was attend by a large gathering of intellectuals of various fields and strata including Deans, Heads, Directors, Professors, faculty members, officers and students from the University and many from civil society of Dibrugarh town.
The programme started with a Swaraswati Vandana by Dr. Sudarshana Baruah, a Faculty Member and lighting of the lamp and paying floral tributes to Professor S. R. Ranganathan, the doyen of library movement in India. Inaugurating the symposium Professor Alak Kumar Buragohain, Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University expressed that to build a knowledge society people must participate in the development of knowledge domain and acquire the scholarly information available throughout globally using ICT. He hoped that in this age of information explosion, academia cannot keep alienated from libraries which manages and controls knowledge and information in both print and digital format and use library vehemently for future development. Professor Nagen Saikia, the Ex- President of Axom Sahitya Sabha and a prominent writer, highlighted the fact that books on display in the library are always appealing for the new users and with the help of ICT description of such new arrivals with an abstract of the content will definitely be helpful for selection of the right book by the right person at the right time and thus the popularity of the library may be improved in the society. The key-note speaker Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, an Associate Professor for Kalyani University, West Bengal and an Open Source Evangelist, made it a point that in view of huge cost involve in subscribing e-resources, users could see options for open source publishers where numerous scholarly contents are freely available for study and quality research. He also advocated that due to monopoly of the reputed publishers, especially in publication of scholarly contents by the researchers and authors, where they eventually lose all their copyrights, the writers instead may publish their heard fought research contents in the reputed open source journals which benefit them equally in fulfilling their academic performance.
Earlier, Dr. Utpal Das, the Deputy Librarian of the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Library of Dibrugarh University, in his welcome address spoke about the value that was imparted by Professor S. R. Ranganathan by his works and contributions in socializing library movement in India and expressed his satisfaction for overwhelming response from all sections of the society in the symposium besides library professionals. As a token of appreciation the best users of library were also awarded with prizes. In conclusion, Professor S. K. Baruah, the Teacher in-charge of the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Library, offered the Vote of Thanks to the huge gatherings. The entire programme was very successfully anchored by Dr. Pallabi Gogoi, Assistant Professor from the Library and Information Science Centre, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.
