Professor K.B. Athreya, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics in Iowa State University, USA and also an Emeritus Professor of Statistics in the same University visited the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University during 22-28 August 2015 to deliver a series of lectures on Probability Theory and Monte Carlo Simulation. The lectures were attended by the students, faculty members and Research Scholars of the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and the Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology (DUIET). The Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University inaugurated the programme on 24th August which was well attended by the faculty members and the students from the Departments of Statistics, Management Sciences, Economics and Mathematics. In his inaugural speech Professor Alak Kr. Buragohain applauded the efforts of the Department of Mathematics in bringing world class Mathematicians to teach the students on various occasions and insisted on pursuance of interdisciplinary research utilizing the Mathematical tools. He recalled the global recognition of a number of mathematicians from India and of Indian origin, who has been awarded the Field Medal, considered as the Nobel Award in Mathematics and the Rolf Nevanlinna prize. Prof. B.R. Sharma, the Head of the Department of Mathematics, in his Welcome Address highlighted the achievements of the Department in the last couple of years and expressed his happiness about receiving support from the University authority. Prof. Athreya in his speech made some remarkable comments on the general perception and the challenges of Mathematics education.
The Department of Mathematics also organized a beautiful interactive programme with the students of the University Model School and Professor Athreya.
