A mini-MTTS (Mathematics Training & Talent Search) Programme was organized by the Department of Mathematics from 18th December to 23 December, 2015 in collaboration with National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Govt. of India. The six day programme was well attended by more than 50 participants of B.Sc. 3rd semester from various academic institutes of the North East India.
Three courses, namely, Foundations, Real Analysis and Linear Algebra, were taken up in the programme.The members of the resident faculty were Prof. Arindama Singh of IIT Madras, Prof. S. Somasundaram of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), Tamilnadu, and Prof. Bhaba Kumar Sarma of IIT Guwahati. Prof. Sarma acted as the Academic Coordinator of the Programme.
The Programme was formally inaugurated on 18th of December by Prof. B. R. Sharma, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University. In his inaugural speech Prof. Sharma gave a brief introduction of the Department of Mathematics and also expressed his sincere gratitude to the MTTS team for choosing the North East region in general and Dibrugarh University in particular for the event. The Local Coordinator of the programme Mr. Dhrubajit Choudhury, Assistant Professor of the Department presented the objectives of the programme and welcomed the MTTS expert team and the participants. On behalf of MTTS team, Prof. B. K. Sarma explained the concept of the MTTS programme and also stressed on the need for holding the events of this kind. The inaugural session was attended by the faculty members of the various Departments of Dibrugarh University.
On 22nd December, Prof. Alak Kumar Buragohain, Vice Chancellor, interacted with the experts and participants, and delivered an edifying speech on the occasion of 128th Birth Anniversary of the Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar, FRS, which is observed as the National Mathematics Day. In his talk, he emphasized the importance of Mathematics in the study of various branches of science and highlighted on India’s long tradition of pursuit of Mathematics especially Geometry, Number Theory and Astronomy. He also appealed to the young minds to continue the legacy. Professor Buragohain made specific mentions about of the role of Mathethematics in understanding and solving Biological problems.
The programme was concluded on 23th December with a valedictory session. In the valedictory address, the members of MTTS team expressed their sense of appreciation and applauded the students for their commitment.
