A six day UGC sponsored National Workshop on Human Rights was inaugurated by former Supreme Court Judge Shri S.N. Phukan at the Indira Miri Conference Hall of the University on 12th March, 2016. In his inaugural speech, Justice Phukan highlighted upon the various legal provisions of the Constitution for protecting and promoting Human Rights of the citizens. He drew reference to the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights in 1948 and stated that the basic tenets of Human Rights are accorded great importance in every democratic country of the world. Citing several landmark judicial pronouncements relating to Human Rights Violation in the country, Justice Phukan mentioned about the need for awareness and consciousness about Human Rights in the context of the Northeast. He also appealed to the young students of law to engage in deep studies in the teaching of the great Saint Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardev.
Justice Hrishikesh Roy of Gauhati High Court delivered the Keynote Speech in the inaugural function in a stimulating address Justice Roy mentioned that the core elements of Human Rights do emanate from the law books or the human charter but these are deeply ingrained in the fundamental human values of compassion, dignity, respect for others and liberty. The emphasis on Human Rights is embedded in all religions, culture and civilizations, he stated.
Professor A.K. Buragohain, the Vice Chancellor of the University in his address reiterated the need for creating awareness about the various elements of Human Rights among the students.
The six day Workshop is organised jointly by Centre for Juridical Studies and the Department of Political Science where several eminent Academicians, Advocates and Human Right Activists of the country shall act as a Resource Persons.
