The International Women’s Day was observed at Dibrugarh University on 8th March, 2016, celebrating the achievements of the women worldwide with a strong appeal for gender equality.
The Centre for Women’s Studies organized a special event on the occasion where a presentation on Significance of International Women’s Day: which emphasized on the history of the emergence of a day as Women’s Day. The presentation highlighted the theme of International Women’s Day 2016, Gender Parity, since the march towards attaining gender parity by 2095(a prediction by the World Economic Forum to attain gender parity) had slowed down. The year to attain a 50-50 world was further estimated until 2133. The programme was followed by the release of the Newsletter of the Centre for Women’s Studies, Dibrugarh University, 2015-16 by Professor Aparna Mahanta and Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Another highlight of the celebration was the screening of a movie Nissidha Nodi directed by Ranjit Sharma, which was followed by a discussion. Some of the questions and thoughts evoked during the post screening discussion related to the concept of Women and Work, the paradox of women in the marginalized and elite classes, the concept of rape, its inhibiting aftermath and repercussion.
The Department of Sociology also celebrated International Women's Day in the Department. The event was anchored by Mr. Partha Pratim Bora who presented the Welcome Address.Professor Alpana Buragohain and Professor Daisy Bora Talukdar deliberated thought provoking speeches on women's plight in the contemporary Indian society. Miss Mayashree Chetia recited a poem entitled 'Nari’ written by Vaishali Chutia.
The most significant event of the day was the staging of a play called "Rang Kukuror Rong" written and directed by Dr. Jyoti Prasad Saikia. The play performed by the students of the department resonated with the current realities of women folk in Indian society and was highly appreciated. The programme ended with a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Anannya Gogoi.
The Dibrugarh University Mahila Chara also organized a meeting at the Ranghar Auditorium premise where Guest Speaker Dr. Rajib Ranjan Gogoi S.D.M.O (Gynaecology) delivered an enlightening speech on Women’s Health covering the period from adolescence to old age.
The meeting was attended by the ladies of the Dibrugarh University Campus and from the nearby villages.
