World Environment Day-2016 was observed in the University with a number of programmes on 5 June, 2016. These programmes were in harmony with this year’s theme, viz., Go Wild for Life and Tolerance for the Illegal Wildlife Trade. In the morning, a Medicinal plant Fruit yielding plant garden-‘Bon Birikh’ was inaugurated on the premise of the Botanical garden with unveiling of a plan for the garden developed by the Dibrugarh University research Scholars Association (DURSA). While inaugurating the garden, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Alak K Buragohain pointed out at alarming rate in which the planet is losing its biodiversity and the dangerous level of pollution and destruction of habitat across the globe. Professor Jiten Hazarika, Dean, Students Affairs also addressed the students and the faculty members present on the occasion. Earlier in the day, the students took part in a campus clean up exercise.

In another special programme organised by the students and faculty members of the Centre for studies in Geography and the faculties of the Centre for Women Studies along with the children of the Day Care Centre of the University. Mr. Joynal Abedin an eminent Wild Life enthusiast attended the programme as the Guest of Honour. Professor Kalpana Deka Kalita, Director of the Centre for Studies in Geography, welcomed the gathering with an ardent appeal for engagement in activities towards protecting our beautiful planet from the perils of degradation and destruction. The young children presented impressive performance on the pristine beauty of nature through songs and dances. The students of the Centre for Studies in Geography staged two short dramas to highlight the urgent need for environment and nature protection. In a performance by the Centre for Women Studies the a ffect of Environmental degradation on the lives of women Mr. Abedin called upon the elders to act sensitively and sensibly towards protection of nature for protecting the interest of the future generation. He made a film presentation on the unique diversity of our wildlife and biodiversity and drew attention to the threats that we pose to this invaluable resource of our state and the region.
