The second International Day of Yoga, observed on the summer solstice- i. e. 21st June, was commemorated by the Dibrugarh University fraternity on the same date this year with enthusiasm and appreciation of the 5000-yr old physical, mental and spiritual practice which traces back its origin to ancient India. The programme was organised jointly by the Centre for Studies in Physical Education and Sports, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, Dibrugarh University at Rangghar, the Dibrugarh University auditorium. The programme involved a lecture by the renowned authority on Yoga and Principal of Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) Prof. Ratan K. Kotokey on 'Yoga Darsana and Coronary Artery Disease'. Prof. Kotokey described the incredible power of Yoga, elucidated on the development of Coronary Artery disease of the heart and emphasised on the potency of Yoga asanas, especially Ashtanga Yoga, to circumvent this stress-related health hazard. His talk received attention and applause from all present in the audience. Prof. Kotokey- along with his accompanying yoga therapist Mr. Anupam Kr Gogoi, also demonstrated a few important asanas which were diligently followed in action by the students of Model School, Dibrugarh University. This was followed by the demonstration of higher-level Yoga asanas by Ms. Lanima Talukdar, Asst. Prof., Centre for Studies in Physical Education and Sports along with two BPEd students, Mukunda Madhav Saikia and Chitrajuti Gogoi while the significance of these asanas was extolled by Mr. Satya Changmai, Asst. Prof., Centre for Studies in Physical Education and Sports. The very informative and demonstrative programme on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga ended with a Vote of Thanks from the Co-ordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell and Asst. Prof., Dept. of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University- Dr. Devid Kardong.
