The sixth Bholanath Gogoi memorial lecture was organized in the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University on August 8, 2016 in the Conference hall of the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University. Dr. S. N. Visvanath Endowment Award is also conferred in the same function.The function was presided over by Prof.D. Majumdar, Dean, School of Earth, Atmospheric Science, Environment and Energy, Dibrugarh University. Prof. J. N. Sarma, the former KDM Chair Professor Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University was present as a chief guest in the function. In his inaugural speech Prof. Majumdarhighlighted his association with Bolanath Gogoi when late Gogoi was working as hydrogeologist in Nagaland. Prof. Majumadar also remembered his close association with and contribution of Dr. S. M. Visvanath towards the establishment of the Department of Applied Geology, in Dibrugarh Uiversity. Prof. T. K. Goswami, Head, Department of Applied Geology, in his welcome address highlighted the uniqueness of the Department of Applied Geology in North East India as it has produced quite a good number of geoscientists who are working successfully in different sectors both in India and in abroad. Prof. J. N. Sarma as a Chief Guest spoke elaborately on the human qualities of Late Bolanath Gogoi and his professional acumen as a hydrogeologist. Prof. Sarma also spoke on Dr. S. N. Visvanath who was his teacher during his student days in the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University in 1972-73. Mr. Satyabrata Guha, Dy. Director General. Geological Survey of India, State Unit Arunachal Pradesh, who was the Guest speaker in the function gave away the Dr. S. N. Visvanath Endowment Award to Mr. Partha Pratim Konwar, a student of M.Sc 4th Sem. The award includes a citation and rupees ten thousand in cash.
Mr. Satyabrata Guha delivered the Late Bholanath Gogoi memorial lecture on the topic “GEOLOGICAL MONUMENTS/ GEOHERITAGE SITES AND GEOPARKS: AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE”. Mr. Guha lucidly described about the UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARKS, WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN INDIA, NATIONAL GEOLOGICAL MONUMENTS, FUTURE OF GEOHERITAGE CONSERVATION, and emphasized the involvement and participation of the local people and society in general for preservation and conservation of the geohritage sites and geological monuments in India. Prof. P. Bhttacharyya offered the vote of thanks and also drew attention to the fact that several places geological significance in North East India can be included in the national map of geo-heritage sites.
