On the occasion of 177th World Photography Day, the Centre for Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication (CSJMC) organized a Photo Festival. This is an annual event the Centre has been observing as a Photo Festival and Exhibition to promote and bring together professional photographers, academicians, students and amateurs in order to encourage photography as an important instrument and media to focus on various aspects of life, nature and issues of social and political significance.
The festival was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Professor Alak Kr. Buragohain. Professor Buragohain in his brief inaugural address pointed out how photojournalism plays a critical role in highlighting important events and incidents which facilitates mobilization of rational public opinion on issues and events. He also referred to photography as an integral tool in research and is also a way for artistic expressions of creativity. Prof. Karabi Deka Hazarika, eminent scholar and author and the Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences graced the occasion and interacted with the faculties and the students.
Renowned photographers, film and photo critics, Mr. Utpal Dutta, and Mr. Bidyasagar Baruah graced the occasion as Distinguished Guests in the event. As a part of the celebration, a seminar on 'Critical and Practical Aspects of Photography' was organized where the two distinguished guests made thoughtful presentations on the subject. The seminar ended with an interactive session with the faculty members, students and amateurs present. In addition, an outdoor Spot Photography contest was also organized by the students of the Centre.
Among the thousands of entries from across India, 75 best photographs in different genres were exhibited at the Students’ Activity Centre. Some of the best photographs were selected and awarded by an expert panel.
