Gandhi Jayanti was observed at Dibrugarh University with three day programme from 2-4 October, 2016 focusing on the achievement of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) in the Dibrugarh district with the joint efforts of the Dibrugarh University, State Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Assam and the UNICEF.
On 2 October, 2016, the programme began with rich tribute paid by the students, faculty members, employees and the representatives of the Public Health Engineering Dept. at Rangghar, the Dibrugarh University Auditorium at 8.00 am. Professor Jiten Hazarika, Dean Students Affairs, and Professor P.K. Borua, Dean R&D addressed the gathering and highlighted upon the significance and relevance of Gandhian Philosophy of Non Violence, Peace, and Cleanliness in public life. It was followed by a campus cleaning programme by the University community. At 1.00 pm Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Science inaugurated an exhibition showcasing the different aspects of Swacch Bharat Mission at the premise of Rangghar. While inaugurating Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika explained to the Gathering in a very lucid way the significance of Swachh Bharat Mission.
On 3rd October 2016, a felicitation programme was organised at Dibrugarh University with the support of Public Health and Engineering, Government of Assam and UNICEF. 41 Villages and 11 Tea Estates, the Gaon Panchayat Representatives, Village Leaders under Dibrugarh District, were felicitated with certificates by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam. Ms. Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh, addressed the gathering with a welcome speech.
The programme was well attended by the senior citizens of Dibrugarh District, Representatives from the Gaon Panchayats, Tea Estates, Village leaders and the people from the neighboring areas of the University. The Hon’ble Chief Minister in his address stated to transform Gandhiji’s dream of Swachh Bharat into reality the citizens must develop individual consciousness towards cleanliness and hygiene. Mere construction of public utilities will not make the country clean, the attitude of people needs to be reformed. Every citizen should take this initiative to make India clean and open defecation free by Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary. Professor Alak Kr. Buragohain, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University, Shri Pallab Luchan Das, Independent Minister of State, Sports and Youth Affairs, Labour and Employment Energy, Culture, Tea Garden Welfare Association. Prasanta Phukan, MLA, Dibrugarh, Teras Guwala, MLA, Duliajan, Rituporna Baruah, MLA, Lahuwal were present as dignitaries on the dias. The programme was anchored by Professor Kalpana Deka Kalita, Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University. The students of the Centre for Studies in Geography presented a choir on cleanliness and hygiene.
