The Department of English, Dibrugarh University in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi conducted a 'Workshop on Translation' from 28 September to 30 September 2016. The purpose of this Workshop was to translate Arundhati Subramanium's 'Another Country: An Anthology of Post-Independence Indian English Poetry' into Assamese. Twenty participants including Resource Persons worked rigorously in the the task of translating more than 130 poems into Assamese. The business end of the workshop was conducted from 28 to 30 September. However, taking into consideration the enormity of the challenge involved in translating an entire anthology, the participants volunteered to extend their involvement for another three days. The Inaugural Function was convened on 28 September in the Indira Miri Conference Hall. It was inaugurated by Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika, Professor of Assamese and the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dibrugarh University, as well as the Convenor of the Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi. The session was presided over by Professor Naba Kumar Handique, Professor of Assamese and Chairperson, Center for Philosophical Studies, Dibrugarh University. Professor Satyakam Barthakur, Professor, Department of Assamese, and Chairperson, Center for Journalism and Mass Communications offered the welcome address. Dr. Ananda Bormudoi, Associate Professor, Department of English, delivered the Keynote Address, in which he underlined the salience of translation, including the problems of equivalence, cultural difference, untranslatability and so forth. Mridul Bordoloi, Associate Professor and Convenor of the Workshop proposed the Vote of thanks. Dr. Anurag Bhattacharyya, Assistant Professor, Department of English, hosted the Inaugural Function. The business part of the Workshop was conducted at the Conference Hall, Department of English. The participants of the Workshop included faculty members from the Department of English, Assamese and Philosophy, Dibrugarh University ; Research Scholars from the Department of English and Assamese, Dibrugarh University ; and faculty members from a few affiliated colleges under Dibrugarh University . The Workshop turned out to be a grand success in so far as all the poems got translated, with the resource persons vouching that the standard of translation was remarkably good. The translated anthology is expected to be published by the Sahitya Akademi soon.
