In Remembrance of Kala Guru Bishnu Prasad Rabha

The Forty Eighth Death Anniversary of Kala Guru Bishnu Prasad Rabha was observed in a solemn function organised at the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Performing Arts. The function began with lighting of the ceremonial lamps in remembrance of the Kala Guru by Professor Alak K. Buragohain, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Advisor of the Centre, Dr. Pranjit Bora, Chairperson, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Performing Arts, Professor Satyakam Borthakur, Chairperson , Centre for Mass Communication and Journalism and others.

Paying rich tribute to Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Professor Buragohain stated that Rabha dedicated his entire life for the downtrodden, persecuted poor of the state. This lifelong dedication and commitment found expressions in the unique creations of Bishnu Rabha- in his lyrics, songs, portraits and paintings, dramas, cinema, dance and thought provoking writings. All creations of this polymath are also the quintessential elements that form the foundation of the contemporary Assamese cultural life. Professor Buragohain called upon the faculty members and the research students of the University to deepen their research in the political and cultural philosophy of Rabha and his great artistic creations. He proposed for a Kala Guru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Chair Professor in the University which will be placed to the Government of Assam for consideration.

Professor Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, in her address stated that Bishnu Prasad Rabha was such a rare personality that had he remained focussed in any one of his inherent talents as an outstanding artist, he would have emerged as a towering figure at the global level. Professor Satyakam Borthakur and Dr. Pranjit Bora also paid their rich tributes to the great icon of humanism and culture of Assam. The event witnessed the beautiful rendition of the songs of the Kala Guru by the students of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Performing Arts and the Department of Assamese.
