Seventeenth Convocation of Dibrugarh University

The Seventeenth Convocation of Dibrugarh University was held on 15th March, 2018 in a solemn function at the Kala Guru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Rangamancha, the open auditorium of the University. Professor Padnambham Balaram, Padmashree and Padabhushan Awardee and Former Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru, was the Chief Guest in the Convocation. Professor Jagdish Mukhi, the Hon'ble Chancellor of the University and the Governor of Assam could not attend the Convocation due circumstances beyond control. In his absence Professor Alak K Buragohain, Vice Chancellor conferred the degrees to the eligible students.

Ten Thousand Eight Hundred Fifty Three successful candidates were conferred the various degrees which included the Ph.D degree to fifty seven candidates, the M.Phil to sixty two candidates. Twelve Hundred Sixty Eight candidates received the Masters degrees in the Convocation. Eight Thousand Seventy four Candidates who graduated in different subjects of Arts, Science, Technology, Commerce, Management etc,. were conferred their Bachelor's degrees by Professor Buragohain.

The prestigious D.Litt, Honoris causa was conferred by the University this year on the renowned Litterateur and Author Shri Arup Kumar Dutta, a Padmashree awardee for his outstanding contribution to culture and polity.

In his absence the address of the Hon'ble Chancellor, Professor Jagdish Mukhi was read out by the Vice Chancellor of the University. Professor Mukhi called upon the young graduates to inculcate human values and commitment to the society and the nation. Professor Buragohain in his welcome address congratulated the young graduates and highlighted upon a few recent achievements of the University.

Professor P. Balaram, the Chief Guest made an illuminating address focusing on the need for meaningful efforts to return the old glory of Indian Academia by decimating the prevailing state of the decadence. He recalled the contribution of the great academic leaders like Professor Ashutosh Mukherjee and Profesor A. L. Mudaliar in the University of Calcutta and the University of Madras years ago. Professor Balaram also highlighted upon the need for intellectual and academic pursuits in the Universities in the truest spirit of inquiry, free from prejudices and reservations.

The Convocation witnessed a jubilant atmosphere on the campus with the fresh alumni celebrating with their parents, friends and the faculties.
