"Green Good Deeds" campaign organized by Department of Applied Geology

gg1The beauty of the Earth is getting dwindle because of various factors and the use of plastics and polythene being on the top. Understanding the importance of the hazard that is being created by the immense use of plastics across the world, Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University in collaboration with Oil India Limited, Duliajan launched the social movement “Green Good Deeds” on  23rd September, 2019.  This is a nationwide campaign under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change, Government of India launched in 2018 which focuses to create awareness and inculcate simple lifestyle habit which citizens can easily adopt in an effort to reduce the hazards of climate change and global warming. The campaign was graced by Prof. Ranjit Tamuli, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University. Department of Applied Geology has been taking a great effort since long to create awareness amongst the masses about the harmful effects of using plastics and how the environment has been polluted by the immense use of plastics by the people. Though it is very difficult to motivate people to carry their own cloth bags for marketing but the department has not yet stopped the effort  to change people using cloth bag instead of polythene and plastic bags and also to change their daily behavior to green good behavior for fulfilling green responsibility. First semester students of M. Sc (Applied Geology) presented a skit with Kalpana Deka Kalita, Professor and Head of the department which explained the merits and demerits of plastics and polythene carry bags. All the dignitaries from Oil and ONGCL along with the Vice Chancellor launched a green bag made by the department as a part of the Green Good Deeds movements at the end of the skit.

gg4Mr. Puneet Suri in his speech praised the effort and urged the grouping to jointly work for reducing the use of polythene and happily informed that he himself always a carry bags to the market. He also suggests performing few small positive actions by every individual and organizations to strengthen the cause of environmental protection. Prof. Ranjit Tamuli assured the gathering to make Dibrugarh University campus a plastic and polythene free one within a short period.  Dr. Manash Kumar Sharma who is former student of this department expressed his willingness to extend co operations towards the department in any need. Positive and negative of polythene use and how the environment has been polluted by using polythenes are highlighted by Mr. Tridiv Hazarika. Ms. Pallabi Borkakoty, Assistant Professor of the department proposed the vote of thanks and Dr. Ratamali Muchahary, Assistant Professor of the department anchored the event.  The event was attended by Deans of Faculties, Heads and faculties of different departments.
