Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University organized the 7th Dr. S. N. Visvanath Memorial Endowment Award Ceremony (2019-2020) in the Conference Hall of the department on 25.11.2019 at 3-30 PM. Dr. Saligram Nanjundiah Visvanath (28.10.1928 - 07.12.2010) was one of the finest and an eminent geoscientist who worked in the Oil India Limited, Dulijan for about 30 years from 1957 and retired as General Manager (operation) in 1986. He has written five very popular books in the field of Geology. His first book titled “Hundred years of Oil” is one of the few books in the British Council Library by an Indian author.
This award instituted by Mrs. Usha Visvanath, wife of late Dr. Visvanath and other family members in this department in 2013, contains a certificate and a sum of rupees 10,000. Every year the award is given to a meritorious student of third semester M. Sc Applied Geology programme. For the session 2019-2020, Mr. Manmohan Gogoi is selected to receive the award. The event started with the University Anthem. Prof. Kalpana Deka Kalita, HOD of the Department, welcomed the guests and on behalf of all the members of the Dibrugarh University extended heartiest thanks to the family members of Dr. S. N. Visvanath for selecting the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University to institute the endowment award. Ms. Pallabi Borkakoty, Assistant Professor of the department, introduced a brief biodata of Dr. Visvsnath and his achievements and contributions to the society. Ms. Sharada Rao, youngest daughter of late Dr. Visvanath gave away the award to Mr. Manmohan Gogoi. Ms. Rao addressed the gatherings and spoke about some interesting and unknown facts from the life of Dr. Visvanath, which encouraged the students and also inspired them to take geology as a career. Mr. Manmohan Gogoi shared his feelings and showed his immense thankfulness to his teachers and his friends for providing him support in every sphere of life. Dr. Binod Bora, the Joint Registrar (Academic), Dibrugarh University talked about the privilege of a student achieving the award and expressed his sincere gratefulness to the family members of S. N. Visvanath for carrying out such a noble act of motivating the students. Mr. Pranjit Kalita, Assistant Professor of the department proposed vote of thanks. Dr. Ratamali Machahary, Assistant Professor of the department hosted the programme.
