To celebrate the glorious 50 years of the establish of the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University, the department organized Dibrugarh University sponsored second Golden Jubilee Lecture in honour of late Prof. Kabita Goswami on 19th February, 2020 at Prof. S.K. Memorial Conference Hall of the Department. Prof. Goswami was a noted woman geoscientist from NE India of international reputation, particularly in the field of sedimentology and served the Department of Applied Geology from 1984 to 2000 as faculty. Academically very bright and brilliant student Prof. Kabita graduated in science in 1973 securing first class first position in Geology honours examination of the Gauhati University from Cotton College. She passed M. Sc in geology with same credit in 1975 from Gauhati University, for which she received a gold medal. One year later, in the year 1976, she passed a post M. Sc diploma course in petroleum technology from Dibrugarh University and in this examination also she secured first class first position. She was awarded Ph.D. degree in 1984 by Dibrugarh University on organic geochemistry. Prof. Kabita Goswami was awarded Commonwealth Academic Scholarship in 1994 to pursue post doctoral research in the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England on petroleum geochemistry. She successfully completed her project titled “Palynofacies of Scottish oil shales, Edinburg, U.K during 1994-1995 under the guidance of Dr. Richard Tyson.
The museum of the department dedicated in honour of late Prof. Kabita Goswami was unveiled by Prof. Sushil Goswami, Former KDM Chair Professor (Retd) of the department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University and husband of Late Prof. Kabita Goswami.
Event started with the University Anthem sung by the students of the Applied Geology Department. Prof. R.N.S.Yadav, honourable Vice Chancellor i/c of Dibrugarh University delivered the inaugural speech and remembered his close association with Prof. Kabita Goswami and her family. He also expressed happiness that the department has honoured the great contribution of Prof. Kabita to the geosciences and society by organizing this second Golden Jubilee lecture in honour of her. Prof. Sushil Goswami, Mr. Devneet Goswami (her son), Mrs. Chayanika Goswami (her daughter in law), Dr. Bibhuti Borthakur, Professor of Surgery specialized in onchology, B. Barouah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, (her younger brother), Prof. J.R. Kayal, Prof. Sebastiano D’ Amico and Prof. Kalpana Deka Kalita, HOD lit the lamp in honor and memory of Prof. Kabita. Prof. kalpana Deka Kalita introduced Prof. Kabita by reminiscing the achievements and works of her life supported by a colourful presentation. Prof. Sushil Goswami expressed his satisfaction being very emotional and extended heartiest thanks to Dibrugarh University and Department of Applied Geology for dedicating the museum in honour of Prof. Kabita and organizing this lecture. He also made a suggestion to upgrade the museum to an excellent one.
The speakers of the evening were Prof. J.R. Kayal, and Prof. Sebastiano D’ Amico. Prof. Kayal, former Deputy Director General (Geophysics), Geological Survey of India, Kolkata, Emeritus Scientist (CSIR), Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Adjiunct Professor, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad is a globally renowned expert in the field of earthquake study and has published many high-impact research papers and books who spoke on “Large Earthquakes in India: A review and future perspective.” Prof. Sebastiano D’ Amico, of University of Malta and Vice chairperson, European Seismological Commission delivered talk on “Seismic Hazards and planning measures”. Ms. Jyotishna Koch and Mr. Anurag Pratim Borbora presented brief introduction of Prof. kayal and Prof. Amico to the audience.
Eminent personalities from Oil India Limited, Dulaijan, Oil and Natural Gas Commission Limited, Jorhat, North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, Deans of various Faculties and Professors of different departments of the university attended the event. Ms. Ankita Phukan, second semester student of M.Sc. (Applied Geology) proposed vote of thanks. Ms. Priyam Kashyap, first semester student of M. Tech (Exploration Geophysics) anchored the event.
