National Human Rights Commission Sponsored One-Day Training Programme on “Women Prisoners and Their Rights”, Organised by Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh dated 27-02-2015
A One-Day Training Programme on “Women Prisoners and Their Rights” sponsored by National Human Rights Commission and Organised by Centre For Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University was held at the Conference Hall of Centre For Juridical Studies. Dr S R Mahapatra, Director in-charge of Centre for Juridical Studies while welcoming the guests described the objectives of the programme. Speaking about the importance of such a training programme he also praised the initiative of NHRC in dealing with the matters relating to the rights of women prisoners. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Science, D.U. Prof. Hazarika in her speech emphasised on the overwhelming plight of women prisoners across the Globe.
There are four technical sessions starting with Dr.Alpana Buragohain, HOD, Deptt. of Political Science, D.U. She gave a brief outline of women prisoners’ right from feminist perspective.The second session was presided over by Mr. R Borah, Associate Professor, Dikhmukh College, Sivasagar. He gave a brief outline about the Famale Criminality and elaborately detailed about the causes of female criminality andsuggests measure for their eradication. Dr Nazarana A. Islam, Advocate, Dibrugarh District Bar was the Resource person in the third session who dealt with in detail the National and International documents available for dealing with the rights of the women prisoners and various pronouncements delivered by the Judiciary. The resource person for the last session was Mr.Safiqur Rahman, Superintendent, Dibrugarh District Jail, Dibrugarh gave a brief analysis about the Jail Mannual and difficulties in implementation of rights of women prisoner.Theprogramme was attended by more than 200 students of the University.
A valedictory Session was held after the technical Session which was presided by Dr S R Mahapatra, Director in-charge, Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University. In the session the rapporteur wind up the meeting that unless otherwise there is informed vigilance on the rights, the very objective of human rights would be frustrated.
