Union State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr. Sonowal at DU

The three day North East Inter University meet –Nahor which began on first May, 2015, reached its scintillating crescendo on the second day when the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) engaged with the delegates in an interactive programme at Rangghar-the University auditorium.

Addressing a packed auditorium, Shri Sonowal expressed his deep appreciation for the DU Post Graduate Students Union for organising this important meet. Nahor – as the inter University meet is named, witnessed participation of more than two hundred representatives from the Manipur Central University, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, Assam Women University, Jorhat, Gauhati University along with the students of the host University. A number of General Secretaries of the Students Unions of the affiliated colleges of DU also participated in the three day event. Shri Sonowal who is an alumnus of the University was welcomed by the Vice Chancellor Professor Alak K Buragohain, President of the DUPGSU and representative of the Assam Women University, Jorhat.

Shri Sonowal responded to an array of important questions raised by the delegates from the participating Universities. The subjects ranged from the issues relating to the construction of mega dams, Bogibeel Bridge, industrialisation of Assam to border issues and the possibility of converting Dibrugarh University to a Central University. Shri Sonowal appealed to the students to dedicate the prime time of their lives now towards study and skill development through hard work and discipline. This alone shall enable the country to shine before the world, he added. In his brief speech from the organising committee of Nahor, Shri Ranjan Bora, urged upon the Union Minister to fulfil a few long standing problems of the University including shortage of accommodation for students on the campus, transportation facility, etc.

A souvenir named Manoratha- Desire of Mind edited by Shri Lakhyajit Buragohain and Shri Nitin Lahkar published on the occasion, was formally released by Shri Sonowal.

Miss Swapna Barua, a student of Manohari Devi Kanoi Girls College, Dibrugarh who won the Gold medal in Kick Boxing in an international Boxing Championship in Thailand recently was felicitated by the DUPGSU and a memento was awarded to her by the Union Minister.
