Dibrugarh University organized the second distinguished lecture as a part of its Golden Jubilee Celebration with Prof. A.C. Bhagabati, an eminent social scientist and anthropologist on 8th May, 2015. The distinguished lecture began with a 2 minute silence observed as a tribute to Prof. Amalendu Guha, a very distinguished historian scholar who passed away on 7th May, 2015. Prof. Bhagabati who was a former Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University made an absorbing personal account of his fifty years of active engagement as a field anthropologist. He recollected his early days as fresh post graduate students when he earned memorable learning experience while working with local communities in lower Assam. Prof. Bhagabati also enthralled the audience with his witty observations and remarkable insights into the lives of different communities when he was pursuing his doctoral research on Maoris in the University of Auckland, New Zealand. While reminiscing his studies in the field trips in New Zealand, Mexico and in the North East India, Prof. Bhagabati pointed out the relevance significance and values of field study in Anthropology. The eminent professor lamented at the contemporary trend in anthropology in some of the universities in India where this has been robbed off.
The octogenarian scholar concluded with his youthful assertion that he still continues to be an active field anthropologist. The presentation was followed with a lively interaction.
