The Dibrugarh University community accorded a very warm felicitation to eminent film director Mr. Jahnu Barua on the conferment of Padma Bhushan.
In a well attended function organised at the conference hall of the University Guest House (Vishrant-Bikshan), Prof. Alak K. Buragohain remarked that the Padma award conferred on Shri Baruah is a befitting recognition to a genius whose creative works in the film world have been already recognised internationally.
Prof. Karabi Deka Hazarika, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences made a brief review of some of the outstanding cinemas directed by Shi Baruah. Faculty members, officers, students and employees also showered profuse appreciation on the outstanding work of Shri Jahnu Barua. Mrs. Gayatri Barua, wife of Shri Jahnu Barua also addressed the gathering.
An overwhelmed Jahnu Barua while expressing his appreciation to the University community pointed out that film is a very powerful medium for education and needs to be encouraged by the Universities. He also lamented that due significance and importance has not been attached to film and art in India unlike in the West. Film and art are invaluable repositories of the history, culture and heritage of a nation and we must all understand and appreciate it, Shri Barua said. The function was followed by interactions between Shri Barua and the members of the University over tea.
