The Training & Placement cell of Dibrugarh University with the guidance of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Alak Kr. Buragohain convened the 3-day Techno-Conclave from May 21st to May 23rd, 2015. The inaugural session was initiated by a motivating and captivating welcome speech by the Vice-Chancellor. A large number of participants including students and faculties of the Engineering Departments of DU, Department of Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geology, Centre for Management Studies (CMS) and Centre for Computer Studies (CCS) gathered in the New Conference Hall to make the event a huge success.
The first day of the session was coordinated by Dr. Subrata Borgohain, Associate Professor of the Department of Petroleum Technology. A number of high level executives from the OIL, ONGC and NRL delivered talks discussing the critical issues relating to the Oil & Gas industry and academic relationship of the industry with the University.
The second day under the coordination of Ms. Utpala Borgohain, Centre in-charge of CCS, began with the opening remarks of Prof. Pranjal Bezborah, Dean School of Commerce and Management Science. The programme took gained momentum with highly motivating and enthusiastic interactive sessions by the executives from L&T Infotech, Xeality Tech, Colortek Meghalaya Pvt. Ltd.
The concluding day was coordinated by Mr. Rupam Deka, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mr. N. P. Kaphungkui, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, which began with an opening remark by Dr. Mukul Borah, Director DUIET. Highly experienced resource persons from IBM and John Energy exchanged their productive ideas and perspectives ensuring a strong linkage between industry and academia with the faculties and the students. A core group of very competent and energetic students and faculty coordinators, especially Mr. Abhijit Baruah, Assistant Professor of CSE and Mr. Pankaj Konwar of Mechanical Engineering constantly engaged themselves in the programmes ensuring its smooth organization.
Every session featured talent showcased by the students of various departments on subjects ranging from ethical hacking, garbage collection model, face-recognition to staircase trolley. This information packed and activity based talents were applauded and cheered by all present in the house. There was paper presentation, concept, ad-making and modeling competition for the students of the concerned departments.
The end of each session was featured with a panel discussion on the theme of the Techno-Conclave ‘Changing Curriculum with Industry Pace: Enhancing Student Employability Quotient’. The present course curricula of the respective departments were subjected to critical analysis and new ideas were proposed to keep the academic pace of the University in line with the industry.
The participants were in full zeal along with the invited resource persons from the industries and the corporate sectors. The programme resulted in a robust model which was synthesized by Dr. Mithun Jagadish Sharma, Assistant Professor and Convener of the event in his thanks giving speech. The model identifies potential areas where industry participation with academia would be most effective for synergism. The base structure of the model suggests incremental restructuring of the curriculum in tandem with the changing needs of the industry, however, keeping the basic curriculum constant. Another significant pillar of the model is the reformation of the students’ internship and convergence of interest towards applied research. Finally, Dr. Sharma concluded that implementation of these ideas would prepare the students well for their own entry into the world of corporate employment.
