The sudden and tragic death of Prof. John F Nash Junior was deeply mourned by the University. The Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University convened a condolence meeting on the sudden demise of Prof. John F Nash Junior and his wife Alicia Nash who met with a fatal car accident on May 23, 2015 in New Jersey, USA. Prof. John Forbes Nash Junior was one of the greatest Mathematicians and Economists of the Twentieth Century. He is famous across disciplines for his extraordinary brilliance in the field of Mathematics in general and a new branch of Applied Mathematics: Game Theory in particular. But more importantly he achieved a larger than life status in the minds of the millions of people around the globe for triumph over a two decade long mental illness that confined him to a mental asylum for years. After recovering from his illness, thanks to the support of his wife Alicia, he again delved into the world of the academics and continued to work till his final days. John Nash perhaps is the only Mathematician cum Economist who got the Nobel prize in Economics in 1994 for his contributions to Game Theory and the Nobel equivalent- the Abel Prize in Mathematics for his contributions to Partial Differential Equations and their applications to geometry.
The meeting was presided by Professor Alak K. Buragohain, the Vice Chancellor, which was well attended by the faculty members and the research scholars of Mathematics, Statistics and Economics, the members of Dibrugarh University Research Association (DURSA) and the Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union. A presentation on the life and work of John Nash was made before the gathering. Prof. N. Srivastava, Department of Economics, NEHU, Shillong was also present in the meeting who enlightened the audience with some of his observations and reflections on Prof. Nash. While paying his rich tributes to Professor Nash, Professor Buragohain urged upon the research scholars and young faculties to study the life and work of this genius.
