The Dibrugarh University Research Scholars Association (DURSA) organised a series of programmes on the occasion of the World Environment Day on 5 June 2015. Keeping in mind the theme of this year’s World Environment Day- “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”, the programmes sought to emphasize the personal responsibility of each individual to support inclusive and sustainable economic development with an ardent aim to preserve the fast-depleting resources of the planet. The day began with a plantation programme of herbal medicinal plants in the DU Hostels which saw enthusiastic participation of a considerable number of students, teachers and other employees of the University. A Bird Mapping programme was launched on the campus which is home to quite a number of exotic avian species. The DURSA also organized a ‘Green Campus Clean Campus’ drive on the campus to highlight the harm caused by non-biodegradable waste to the environment. The observation of the World Environment Day was concluded with a special lecture on ‘Ecological Security’ by Prof. Alak K. Buragohain, the Vice-Chancellor of the University. The lecture which was held in the New Conference Hall was keenly attended by a large number of faculty, research scholars and students. Prof. Buragohain introduced the concept of ‘Ecological Security’ and explained in a very lucid manner its relation with this year’s Word Environment Day theme “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.”
