The first ever International Yoga Day was observed at Dibrugarh University with a number of programmes on 21 June, 2015 at Rang Ghar, the University auditorium. A large number of students from the University, the University Model School and from a few neighbouring schools, teachers, faculty members of the University, members of the DU Mahila sora and other invited guests including the members of the Executive Council of the University participated in the programme.
The day began with a special oration on the "Role of Yoga in Disease Prevention" by Professor Ratan Kumar Kotokey, senior Professor of Cardiology of Assam Medical College who is also a reputed Sanskrit scholar. Professor Kotokey in his two part discourse elaborated the scientific and philosophical linkage of Patanjali Yoga. He highlighted on how the very ancient philosophy and science of Yoga developed in India thousands of years ago, is validated by modern science of Physics and Medical Biology. In the second part of his lecture, Professor Kotokey explained how different Asanas of Yoga help in preventing and in ameliorating various ailments.
Reputed Yoga Acharya, Shri D.K. Sharma demonstrated various asanas of Yoga and their effect on human body and mind. Many students and others from the University participated in the mass Yogasana demonstration programme. Earlier while inaugurating the International Yoga Day in the University, Professor Alak K Buragohain, the Vice Chancellor explained how Yoga can bring about the total well being of human lives physically, mentally and spiritually and thereby contribute to peace and human development.
